Welcome to the Web site of the Division of Nephrology
(kidney diseases) and Hypertension at John Stroger
Hospital of Cook County!

Message from the Chairman
Peter Hart, M.D
Peter Hart, MD, FACP
System Chair, Nephrology
The Division of Nephrology at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital) has a rich tradition of providing the highest quality of health care services to the residents of Chicago and Cook County.

Stroger Hospital (formerly Cook County Hospital) is part of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System (CCHHS), the largest and busiest component of the safety net for health care in Chicago and sub-urban Cook County.

The increasing prevalence of kidney disease and continuing "epidemic" of hypertension among residents of Cook County provides a unique setting for outstanding patient care, clinical training and research in Nephrology and hypertension.

Our Faculty, staff, trainees and nurses are highly experienced and have special expertise in the assessment and treatment of glomerular diseases especially Lupus nephritis, Diabetic kidney disease, Chronic kidney disease, HIV related kidney disease and resistant hypertension.

The division has a very busy dialysis unit at Stroger Hospital and maintains close ties with chronic dialysis facilities city wide. We also provide "24-7" consultations for all CCHHS institutions including Ambulatory and Community Healthcare Network (ACHN), Core center and the Diabetic network program.

We have an outstanding teaching program offering fellows, residents and medical students hands-on clinical experience, didactic sessions including morning reports, case-based resident lectures, clinical case, research and radiology conferences and a popular monthly Biopsy conference that attracts nephrologists and fellows from the entire medical district and beyond.

We have a dedicated basic and translational science research group with special interests in proteinuria, organ regeneration and urinary biomarkers of kidney disease. Our clinical collaborative research group participates in clinical trials with special interest in Diabetes, Hypertension and Chronic kidney disease. The Division offers a combined fellowship with the section of Nephrology, University of Illinois at Chicago.

Sincerely,

Peter D. Hart, MD, FACP,
System Chair, Nephrology
